Joe Crump, Group VP of Strategy and Planning at Razorfish, recently spoke at the IAB Mexico’s annual conference about his agency’s plans to expand into Latin America. He shared a few digital success stories that can be brought to Latin America, most notably Obama’s digital marketing campaign and Terra, one of Razorfish’s clients. You can download his presentation here.
Why is Razorfish expanding in the region now? Latin America, he says, is stuck in an “old media” rut. Online ad spending per user in Latin America equals only $21 whereas “Everyone else” around the world averages out to $180 per user. Nevertheless, Joe says, “You are the biggest growth market on the planet for digital. The population wants it. Brands, creative agencies, and media companies are not keeping up. The revolution will start with you.”
In May, Peter Horan took the helm as the new CEO of Goodmail Systems. An industry veteran with decades of leadership experience, Horan joined the company following a 16-month stint as CEO of IAC Media and Advertising, where he oversaw big-name industry properties including Evite, Pronto, Citysearch and Ask.com.
Experienced in leading both start-ups and industry powerhouses, Horan previously served as president and CEO of AllBusiness.com. Prior to that, he was president and CEO of About.com Inc. — up until its $410 million sale to the New York Times Company in 2005 — and CEO of venture-funded DevX Inc.
In a presentation at IAB Mexico’s recent annual conference, Horan spoke about the lessons industry has learned from previous technological revolutions, as well as media business models that have no direct parallel in the old media world. Following the IAB Mexico event, Horan sat down with iMedia to discuss his recent job transition, Goodmail’s plans to merge email and video, and the steps his company is taking to restore trust in email marketing. This past Thursday, I attended in the IAB Mexico’s annual event – IAB Conecta – and learned about Mexico´s online market and some insightful Internet trends overall. These include:
1. YouTube currently has about 300 million users globally and is growing 80% year-over-year
2. YouTube users upload 8 hours of video every 60 seconds, according to speaker Mitch Joel (my friend Pablo Slough actually corrected this statistic saying it is equal to 10 hours of video every 60 seconds, which is equal to 52,000 feature-length films per week)
3. Mexico’s online ad market grew 96% year-over-year and was worth about $100 million dollars in 2007
4. The IAB Mexico is launching its first online ad awards called Premios IAB Conecta
5. Activ@Mente, founded by Gustavo and Ana Ross here in Mexico City has expanded its network of offices to include Mexico City, Caracas (Venezuela), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago (Chile) and is looking to expand in Spain and a few other countries soon.
6. Online agency Fabrica Interactiva, founded by Rafael Jimenez, has renamed itself Substance with an innovative logo referencing the atomic table
7. 10 trillion text messages will be sent in 2008 around the world
8. Nils Muller, CEO of TrendONE in Germany, is a rock star speaker and futurist who smashed a TV on stage saying, “all of your money is stuck in this little black box.” Watch an interview of him here….
